Tyler Cann

Tyler Cann is the Associate Curator of Contemporary Art at the Columbus Museum of Art. He was the inaugural curator of the Len Lye Collection at the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery in New Plymouth and created exhibitions that celebrated the work of one of New Zealand’s most recognised names in international art circles.

Joining the CMA at a critical moment in 2013 on the verge of its expansion, Tyler brings a fresh perspective to the CMA’s permanent collection with a broad international outlook. Tyler was born in Los Angeles, where he completed a bachelor of Art History at the University of California, Berkeley and continued to pursue a PhD in History of Art and Architecture in Harvard University.

Tyler has been a curator at Ikon Gallery in Birmingham, UK, working with artists such as Bedwyr Williams, Sarah Browne and Gillian Wearing. Before Ikon, Tyler was a curator in the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery in New Zealand, where he developed research-based exhibitions on the artist and filmmaker Len Lye such as Chromosome, the Cosmic Archive and All Souls Carnival, as well as showcased the work of artists such as Phil Dadson, Tessa Laird and Daniel von Sturmer. As Associate Curator of Contemporary Art in CMA, Tyler will seek to develop CMA’s Contemporary Art program through acquisitions, exhibitions, publications and programs.
