Sonia Payes

Sonia Payes is an acclaimed international new media artist and photographer based in Melbourne. Over her many years of practice, Sonia’s photography has incorporated a broad spectrum of techniques and subjects, showing she is equally at ease with choice and chance.

Sonia gained attention with her early portraiture, with her images that both captured and defined her subjects. Her photographic essays of 60 significant artists have been published in the 400-page book: ‘UNTITLED.Portraits of Australian Artists’ (2007).

More recently, Sonia’s work has veered towards the surreal, with haunting portraits and landscapes that captivate the viewer with things obscured and left unseen.

A Master Photographer with the Australian Institute of Photography, Sonia studied at the Australian College of Photography, Arts and Communication and at The Melbourne School of Art and Photography.

She is represented by Fehily Contemporary in Collingwood, and has had solo exhibitions at Charles Nodrum Gallery, John Buckley Gallery, Cube 37 New Media Gallery at the Frankston Arts Centre, The John Curtin Gallery at The Curtin University of Technology, and has participated in numerous local and international group exhibitions.

Last year her works were shown in Shanghai twice. In the latter exhibition she was represented by ACAF at The Asia Pacific Contemporary Art Fair in Shanghai . This year Sonia has a solo exhibition in the L’Oreal Fashion Week , followed by her new works in solo exhibitions concurrently in Melbourne and Beijing.
