Catherine is an experienced researcher and consultant who has worked in the fields of design and innovation for over 20 years. Catherine has worked with senior management in government, public sector and industry, and has directed and successfully delivered a range of national and international projects and publications, many of which are leading edge, relating to strategic aspects of design, innovation and sustainability.As Programme Director in Design Innovation at Glasgow School of Art (from 2010), she is responsible for the set up, strategic direction and operations of the Design Innovation Studio (now part of the Institute of design Innovation, InDI) a research and knowledge exchange unit applying design thinking to enable organisations to innovate. Catherine is a research partner in CommonHealth, a £2m MRC/ESRC funded research project exploring the role of social enterprise on health and wellbeing; and on a £400k EPSRC-funded project entitled Aging Population Attitudes to Sensor Controlled Home Energy (APAtSCHE II). Previous academic posts include at Manchester School of Management and De Montfort University.
As Managing Director of Journey Associates (from 2004), Catherine draws on her experience in academia, the public sector and commercial practice, to facilitate a co-creative approach to help client organisations make the most effective use of design and innovation resources. Clients include the BBC, the British Council, Glasgow School of Art, NESTA (the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts), the NHS, and the Scottish Government. She also directed Sust., a government initiative supporting sustainable design in architecture and the built environment.
Catherine chaired the European Creative Hubs Forum, in Lisbon (January 2015). She is a member of the Patient Advice and Support Service Local Advisory Group for the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. Catherine is also a member of the Reference Group, a strategic advisory group for The Lighthouse, Scotland’s Centre for Design and Architecture.
